Your child can participate in a valuable research opportunity...

This is an opportunity to be part of a research study utilizing two tests of attention.

Pediatric Attention Deficit Disorders Screener (PADDS) and the Tests of Variables of Attention (TOVA) have joined forces to offer two top of the line computerized tests to be used in conjunction with clinical evaluation for proper diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD).

The PADDS tests a child's executive function and working memory.  Meaning, the controls that allow a person to perform complex behaviors that require, among other things, planning, attending, organizing input, storing and retrieving information, modulating emotions and sustaining effort.  The PADDS was designed to produce similar work demands of that found in a classroom setting (i.e. attending to instruction; assimilating information; accommodating information; organizing, sequencing, and manipulating information; monitoring emotional activity; formulating a plan of action; implementing the plan; working under time pressure; avoiding distraction; and being adequately prepared).

The TOVA is an objective, neuropsychological measure of attention, not just a subjective rating scale.  The assessment is a very simple "computer game" that measures responses to either visual or auditory stimuli.  The TOVA has been proven over time to assist clinicians through confirmation of clinical impression, verify treatment, and can follow attention throughout the duration of treatment.

As a parent, what can I expect for my child?

Two tests will be administered.  There will be a $10.00 incentive for your child for each test completed (maximum incentive, $20.00).

Administration of both tests, including a 10 minute break between the two tests, will take approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes.  You can expect a 15-20 minute review and interpretation with Dr. De LLanos at the completion of the testing.

For children with ADD/ADHD, who have improved on medication treatment and who are not current patients of The Dr. De LLanos Clinic:

You can expect that your child will receive a complete and thorough diagnostic assessment and comprehensive attention testing to confirm your child's need for ADD/ADHD medication treatment.

For children with ADD/ADHD, who have improved on medication treatment and who are current patients of The Dr. De LLanos Clinic:

You can expect that your child will continue to receive complete and thorough diagnostic assessment and comprehensive attention testing to confirm your child's need for ADD/ADHD medication treatment.  Parents can expect that your child will continue to receive an ongoing evaluation of the severity of attention difficulties throughout their growth and constant validation that your child is receiving the lowest possible dose of psycho-stimulant medication.

All tests must be completed during the morning hours, a scheduled time between 9:00am and 12:00pm, Monday through Friday.

Testing will be completed off medication.  Needed medication may be given at the completion of testing.

Children may withdraw from participation at anytime.

What would exclude my child from participation?

Children diagnosed with clinical psychopathology, severe behavioral disturbance, or psychosocial trauma will be excluded from this research study.

Children receiving attention medication, in conjunction with anti-depressant, anti-anxiety, or anti-convulsant will be excluded from this study.

Any child taking Strattera will be excluded due to the ethical limitations in stopping the medication long enough to remove it from the blood stream.
